After nearly 7 years of debuting (2019), TON Coin has been rebranded as The Gram Coin, a name which was initially present in the 2019 whitepaper for the Telegram Open Network. The naming has been in-effect from 1 June 2026 and the same was advertised on TON’s official X handle on 15 June 2026.
Telegram has conducted this renaming to align its blockchain project better with the messaging app, which was its initial throught for the project in the first place.
We have tested this renaming in our own capacity and found that the Telegram mini app for TON and the official TON documentation has rebranded the cryptocurrency.

The first renaming occurred in 2020 when the US SEC had raised dispute for the cryptocurrency’s $1.7 billion raise (from two SAFT rounds). Responding to the same, Telegram had to return $1.2 billion to investors and had to detach Telegram’s blockchain development program from its main operations.
Since then TON has been known widely as the The Open Network (formerly Telegram Open Network). The cryptocurrency too had to be renamed as TON Coin from Gram Coin.
The SEC Dispute That Led to the Creation of TON Coin
In 2020, The US SEC raised several disputes against popular cryptocurrency offerings such as the XRP, TON, UNI, and several others. The dispute was that the SEC claimed these cryptocurrency ICOs as security offerings without due diligence.
Telegram too was caught in the middle of the dispute regarding its $1.7 billion raise. The money was meant for the development of Telegram’s own Layer-1 blockchain. The money was raised in two SAFT rounds.
However, given Telegram’s aim for its own IPO, it had to separate the blockchain program from itself. The blockchain was renamed from Telegram Open Network to The Open Network and the cryptocurrency was called the TON Coin.
Telegram’s 2019 Whitepaper Mentions Gram Coin
Telegram’s first whitepaper on its own blockchain network and cryptocurrency mentions the name of the token as Gram Coin.
You can easily find the original name under Gram’s and TON’s official documentation.
